Music is around us, even if we don’t notice it. Music plays an important part in our lives. Since we are born, lullabies or different toys help us calm ourselves and generates an emotion, making us feel a certain way. Picture a baby with a shaker, the joy creating a rhythm and that sound harmonizes with their laugh and giggles motivating their development. As we grow up we change our perspective and, most of us, become passive receptors of music. However music is always there, on the radio, in films helping us understand how the character is feeling.

Did you know a study revealed that plants respond to different types of music? When exposed to classical music they generate different frequencies, these differ to the ones plants generate when exposed to rock or techno music.

At Parkhill Junior School, we want to provide children with different opportunities to explore music and understand its meaning and intention. We want our pupils to become musicians and take an active part in their learning while playing instruments or composing different songs. We all have a certain song linked to a memory or a person but, do we know why? By the end of their journey at Parkhill Junior School children will have a full understanding of the different elements of music and have developed the technical vocabulary that will enable them to connect with other musicians.
