Please note it is not possible for the school to relay messages to your child during the school day.

Money: We do not accept cash at school. Please click on parents tab of the website to find out how to pay online for school dinners and educational visits

Parking: Parking on zigzag lines outside the school is a traffic offence and places the children in great danger. If you do bring your child to school by car please find a safe place to park.

School Times

School will start at 9:00am and finish at 3:30pm.

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will enter and exit via the double gates leading into the playground.

When I started at Parkhill Junior, I received a warm welcome from all members of staff and especially from the children. I was very impressed by how much the right-respecting behaviour was embedded throughout the school. I was pleased to see how well the children followed, ‘The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child’ (UNCRC) and how it was second nature to them. It made me realise, that I have definitely made a right decision to be part of this rights-respecting school.

We face conflicts in our daily lives of varying significance. Our pupils are constantly making choices as they live their lives, both independently and with guidance. I believe the core of a successful society is kindness and respect for others and being part of the Rights Respecting team, I value my role in promoting rights-respecting behaviour in our pupils so they continue to create and enjoy their safe, secure and harmonious environment for learning.

I was impressed with Parkhill’s Rights Respecting ethos the moment I joined, both in how thoroughly the language is integrated into the children’s routine, and how much they enjoy using it. I facilitate BSL Ambassadors, in promoting rights around inclusion, expression, and disability. Every week, our BSL Ambassadors teach the rights-respecting sign of the week to their class. As well as participating in the Pupil Voice Fair, we’ve incorporated BSL into many school-wide events. For example, during the Anti-Bullying and Children’s Mental Health Weeks, ambassadors chose special signs to teach each day (e.g. ‘Need help?’ I am proud of how much BSL’s part, in our wider rights-respecting mission, has grown.

Absence

If, for any reason, a child is absent from school, the school should be informed by telephone on the first day of absence. The child must bring a letter of explanation on their return. ANY UNAUTHORISED ABSENCES TAKEN DURING TERM TIME MAYBE SUBJECT TO A £120 FINE FOR EACH CHILD FROM EACH PARENT ISSUED BY THE LONDON BOROUGH OF REDBRIDGE

Each year focuses on the three aspects of the computing curriculum: computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Computing is more than just technology but also incorporates a range of other subjects such as maths, science and D&T.

Physical Education (PE) at Parkhill Junior School We aim to encourage a lifetime love of sport and keeping fit to lead healthy, active lives. Our PE aspires to develop confidence, resilience, passion, respect and determination. It helps to improve their mental health and cognitive development as a result they will be more likely to concentrate and maintain focus in lessons. All children are given the opportunity to compete in sport and other demanding activities to build their character and talents (RRS article 29) in order to excel in a broad range of physical activities as well as help embed values such as respect and fairness. Not only does PE improve a child’s sporting skills but also it develops their communication, teamwork, leadership, creativity and problem-solving skills within a classroom setting as well as preparing them to be young global citizens. Assessment in PE

Assessment in PE PE at Parkhill Junior School is assessed through use of teacher questioning to the children throughout a session to consolidate learning and establish previous knowledge. At the end sessions peer assessment is taken place where children analyse and evaluate each other’s skills or performance focussed on that lesson or unit. At the end of each unit of PE, the teacher assesses the children against the skills required below, at or above age expectation.

No watches, necklaces or bracelets.
Those with religious bangles need to bring their own sweatband or tubigrip bandage
Hair needs to be tied up if at shoulder length or longer.
No gloves allowed to be worn during outdoor PE lessons
Football replica shirts are not allowed
Leggings are not allowed to be worn due to health and safety reasons.

Year 5 Swimming Guidance

‘Before I didn’t know how to play cricket or what it was. However, after learning how to hold a bat and throw balls, I have learnt new skills and feel more confident now! I actually find it fun!’ Amelia in 3O

Swimming
All pupils at Parkhill Junior School are given the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons when they reach Year 5, and the engagement with these lessons is 100%. Based on the swimming sessions that took place over summer 2023, from our current year 6 pupils, 36% can swim 25m (1 length of the swimming pool) confidently, 18% accomplished their water skills and 3% achieved their lifesaving skills. We are so proud of every child for showing great participation.

PE Homework
The government has recommended that all children and young people engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity, for at least 60 minutes (1 hour) every day. In our drive to keep everyone active at home, as well as in school, we assign all children weekly PE homework. Geography is everywhere and is a huge part of our everyday life. From making our way to another destination (maps), exploring our local area when going shopping, to the park or any other normal daily activity. When watching the news, we are reminded about climate change, natural disasters and the beauty of nature. Which is why we believe it is important in Parkhill to ask questions that will explore geographical themes about the world we live in and investigate geographical knowledge about our world. The children will take these skills and apply them to everyday situations, be more aware of global issues and how they can make a difference to our planet.

From an early age, I was always curious about the world around around me and would continuously ask questions about how objects worked or things that I saw. By the age of eight, much to the despair of my parents, I had already unscrewed the back of my T.V. set to look at it’s components! For me, science lessons should instil a lifelong excitement and curiosity about our world and beyond. Scientific learning should equip our children as future citizens with an understanding of scientific and technological approaches and evidence, so that they will be able to make informed decisions on scientific and technological issues. Article 12: Every child has the right to have a say.

The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Pablo Picasso The Arts at Parkhill Junior School The arts allow children to express themselves better than other subjects. They don’t just develop a child’s creativity; the skills they learn are used across the curriculum. Getting up on a stage and singing gives our children a chance to step outside their comfort zone. As they improve and see their own progress, their self-confidence grows. The arts strengthen problem solving and critical thinking skills. Learning how to make choices and decisions is essential to prepare them for their adult life. “A man paints with his brains and not with his hands.” Michelangelo Everyone in Parkhill Junior has the ability and right to participate in the arts. Always fun and creative, the arts allow us to express ourselves.
